All investments are cyclical!. We believe a plan should be implemented on rules for funding an investment over time, and when to reduce or exit an investment. Our studies show what should be otherwise obvious to most investors but largely overlooked: investments that continue to be successful will earn their greatest returns after significant drawdowns. Actual capital (and mental capital) should be put aside for the inevitable potentially opportunistic down cycles of a managed investment. It is noteworthy that Warren Buffet is generally opportunistic during market crises whereas most investors are anxiously evaluating or exiting their investments. The objectives are to to decrease the probability of prematurely exiting good investments in a down cycle, extend an investors staying power, capitalize on reversion to the mean after down cycles and to contain the losses on investments that do ultimately require termination. In our studies it is noteworthy that many managed investments that continue to be successful after historic worst drawdowns have earned 2x to 8x their average returns within 12 months, 24 months, 36 months, and 48 months windows.
